I love Austinites; we’re a bunch of social media nerds in this city.
Today @AustinDirtyDog shared with us the wonderfully horrendous Twitter account for the Shell Oil Company Social Media team.
@ShellisPrepared was created “in light of recent events” and for “actively monitoring and responding to slanderous statements made toward Royal Dutch Shell.”
Below the Twitter bio is a dead link for www.articready.com
Upon first reading the oil giant’s social media page, it appears that whomever is writing their tweets has never seen or heard of social media before.
Above and below that gem lie other beautiful tweets such as:
And possibly hundreds of personal tweets sent to individuals like this:
I have to admit, at first I believed it. I honestly thought there were several 75 year-old men in leisure suits sending tweets from an Apple Lisa in a windowless room in Houston, Texas.
Then I realized there is no possible way this account is real.
Can someone really be that bad at the Internetz?!
What do you think? Real or fake?
[Update: Looks like it’s fake, folks. Thoughts on this culture jamming campaign? Good? Bad? Don’t give a shit and just want to play the ice cap melting game “Angry Bergs“?]

I think it’s brilliant. The straight-facedness of the whole ArcticReady.com site, combined with a Twitter account that really does portray Shell as utterly out of touch with how the Internet works, is an extremely savvy way to promote the project. I’m into it.
It can’t be true. If it is then God help us all.

Greenpeace and the Yes Men. It’s a great campaign.
Yes I had to investigate when I saw this on twitter today… Pretty cool, here is a little more background.
