Fashion Fridays: Pube-revealing bathing suits and BBQ

I hope y’all had a wonderful 4th of July. Besides working for a few hours, I got a little swimming and fireworks in. I also got some unintentional flashing in.

My mother gave me this delightful gold bathing suit from the 70s that makes one feel like a 50s pinup model (if they can squeeze their ass into it; it takes me about 5 minutes to get the darn thing over my badonk).

As you an see from the picture, the bathing suit is one piece with little boobie cups and a nice golden sheen.

What you can’t see from the picture, because I’m crossing my legs, is my crotch. Because you would see it.

The bathing suit, when dry, looks like a solid piece of craftsmanship.

Upon getting wet, the suit turns into a quintessential 70s pube show that I imagine they used to dig in that decade.

I’m a confident person, but I’m not quite at a place in my life where I enjoy publicly showing off my lady parts. I guess this suit will only be used for sunbathing.

Or Boogie Nights reenactments.

80s Fashion Night: Howard Jones, Less Than Zero and Keytars (pics)

I met my match with Geoff. Never have I met a person who enjoys dressing up as much as I do.

The man has two closets full of costumes.

We will take any excuse to dress up and last night’s excuse was a Howard Jones concert at Austin City Limits.

Who is Howard Jones, you ask?

This awesome dude:

Here is one of HoJo’s most popular songs, “What is Love?” (not to be confused with the Haddaway jam). Trust me, once you hear this song you’ll know what it is. You’ll be all like, “I know that song, but I have no idea who the f Howard Jones is!” It took me two days to stop calling him Howard Johnson.

HoJo has a bunch of other hits that you’ll probably recognize but got confused with Thomas Dolby.

Geoff and I decided to dress 80s last night because it’s our favorite decade.

He wore an 80s New Wave outfit that consists of his original clothes from the 80s and I wore my best Blair in Less Than Zero ensemble.

Sadly, I wasn’t expecting much from the Howard Jones show (we got (more…)

Best Nail Polish in the World is by American Apparel

I’ve never been a girly girl.

I don’t wear pink, I’ve never gotten a manicure or pedicure, I’ve never envisioned what my wedding dress will look like and I haven’t brushed my hair regularly in three years (note- this doesn’t mean my hair is dirty, I do indeed wash my hair).

However, I love the living crap out of Sephora, I could watch every Ryan Gosling movie ever made and I do enjoy some red lipstick and smokey eyes once in awhile.

But, most of the time I like sitting in yoga pants, tank top and watching my butt grow larger and larger the longer I work from home.

If I ever need a quick reminder that there is a woman somewhere beneath the unsexiness, I whip out my American Apparel nail polish.

American Apparel’s nail polish is quite possibly the best out there. It’s non-toxic, comes in a slew of unique colors and lasts for weeks. Weeks, I tell you!

Slap a clear top coat on your nails and you’re set for the long haul. Screw OPI or all the expensive salon junk.

Saddle Shoes for the Kid in Every Adult

Geoff is back in town after 3 long months working in Portugal! Huzzah!

Having been in Europe, he was inspired to own a pair of Dr. Marten’s and decided to look when back in Austin.

Bad freakin’ idea.

Do you know that only eight stores in Austin carry Docs? And the first one we went to (Tyler’s) said they no longer carry them because they didn’t sell?

Austin being has fashion forward-backward as it is, it surprises me that Docs aren’t popular. When I think about it, I rarely see the bright yellow stitch adorning people’s footsies here in ATX.

I was not looking for shoes at all because I’m broke as ffffffff, but came across a pair of saddle shoes by Keds on clearance ($25) and IN MY SIZE at Tyler’s! Having size 9-9 1/2 feet means you never find good shit on sale. It also means you look like a clown half of the time. The beauty of these saddle shoes are that they’re made out of soft suede and conform to your foot rather than looking all dumpy. I also have senior citizen knees (more…)

Vinca: Your New (Or Already) Favorite Locally-Made Jewelry

source: Vinca USA

Nestled in a garage apartment in Central Austin is Vinca, the inspired jewelry company of Amanda Dimova. Vinca concocts plastic, wood, crystal and leather jewelry and decorations for kids and the kid in every adult.

Ten of thousands of cupcake earrings, unicorn rings and mustache necklaces have been designed, cut and shipped out of Dimova’s 200 square foot space. At Fab.com alone, Vinca saw over 11,000 pieces sold.

Not too shabby for a business initially started as an experiment.

Amanda Dimova grew up in Brownsville, Texas at her parents’ shoe factory, Bear Feet. As a child, she learned to be creative with the excess leather lying around the factory. It was here that she developed her entrepreneurial spark.

“I always had this idea I would either continue the shoe business, or use it to make something new. From a young age I aspired to be self-employed, though I wasn’t quite sure how it would happen,” Dimova says.

In middle school, the Dimova family moved (more…)

Bohemian Chic and Armpit Fat

Here is one more photo from the Rachel Roy shoot I did this SXSW. This picture cracks me up because I look like I see God sitting somewhere on a grassy knoll off I-35 (we shot this near Franklin’s BBQ). I also think they airbrushed my armpit fat. Yay! I loved the dress I was wearing. It’s called the The Laurel Halter Dress $139 and is such a pretty shade of blue.

What I’m Doing Today: Trying to wash the green out of my hair.

I Creamed My Face (Or What Skincare Products Work Best)

Throughout the past fifteen years, I’ve had ups and downs with my skin. When I lived in Los Angeles it was clogged and oily. If work stress didn’t make it difficult for me to keep my skin clear, then the heavy layer of smog suffocating everyone did. When I moved to Austin my skin got healthier, but it’s never been 100% perfect. I’m sure I’ve had a lady friend or two with airtight pores who has gotten super uncomfortable with me staring at their canvas-like faces for long periods of time. How does their skin stay so perfect?, I think.

The one upside to having slightly oily skin is that it keeps you from getting super wrinkly early.

At 28, my skin has found a happy medium. I would be stupid if I didn’t recognize that it mostly has to do with my hormones, but I’d like to think that my skincare regime plays a part in it. A year ago I noticed the cobwebs around my eyes were starting to define themselves. At times I looked tired and old. Then I remembered my Mom’s age-old saying, “Always (more…)
