Tell Me Your Secrets and I’ll Tell You Mine

Once in a while I tell secrets on my blog.

What the hell am I talking about? I have no secrets. I throw up every thought, feeling and experience like a kid on a roller coaster after gorging him or herself at The Golden Corral.  You’re subjected to the constant diarrhea of my mental flow.

However, one time I did have a specific secrets post where I shared details about sunbathing nude on the rooftop of my former celebrity boss’ office and being called “carpetmuncher” as a child.

It’s been a few years since that post, so I’ve decided to add to the list:

-One time Jeremy Irons hit on me. At least I think he did. I’m assuming he thought I was someone else though. I was standing alone in the corner of a Toronto Film Festival party and he walked up, stuck out his hand and said, “Hiii, I’m Jerrrrrrremey” in his flirty English accent. Confused, I stuck out my hand quickly and said, “Hi, I’m Lauren” and then we stood there side-by-side in silence until I nervously walked away.

Have You Seen Holy Hell?: The First Film to Premiere on the iPad is Making Waves in Interactive Media

So, y’all have heard about the first ever iPad movie, Holy Hell, shot in good ol’ Austin, TX, right?

If you haven’t been following this cutting-edge series, the final chapter of the film will be released today and you should check it out so you can become one of the cool kids that can  say, “Yeah… I just watched the first ever movie made for the iPad,  SO WHAT?”

In celebration of the final chapter’s debut, the filmmakers are offering the entire film FOR FREE this Friday, January 11th and Saturday, January 12th.

The film has been getting a lot of buzz in the film and tech industries, with its own flashy SXSW Interactive panel to add to its long list of cool factors.

The feature stars Edwin Neal (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE), Kenneth Wayne Bradley (DRIVE ANGRY), Barbara Chisholm (FAST FOOD NATION) and Ellie McBride (TREE OF LIFE), and was directed by director Rafael Antonio Ruiz, who is currently voyaging the festival circuit with his acclaimed short A Quiet Girl’s Guide to Violence (more…)

You Can’t Take a Picture of This; It’s Already Gone

Last Friday, I posted the picture of my grandparents seen below on my Hipstercrite Facebook page. The photo and the story behind it proved to be popular, so I decided to sift through old photographs of my family and post them here.

For reference, the photos include my grandfather and grandmother on my mother’s side, my father, my mother and I. My grandparents divorced in the 1960s and my grandfather died shortly thereafter. My parents divorced in the 1990s and I am their only child. I’m close to all of them and looking at these photos brings me both great joy and sadness that so much time has passed.

We’re all stuck in the past, so oblivious as to what’s to come…

Delusions of Grandeur 2013: What Are Your Big Dreams for the New Year?

2012, my last year of slinging it through my twenties, was a year of many firsts: completed my first movie, advanced my freelance writing career, started the second year of an adult relationship with someone I love and fart in front of,  got a pet cat!…which died two weeks later, met David Duchovny…in his boxer shorts! and had my adopted grandfather move into a home for folks with Alzheimer’s which threw off the emotional balance of my family.

Overall it was a pretty wonderful year, one I will look back on when I’m an old, wrinkly woman and think, “2012 was the best year of my life”  while silently weeping into a pillow.

I recently came across a list I wrote at 12 years of age of predictions for my adult self. The list included: “Make a movie!”, “meet David Duchovny!”, “write a book!” and “meet Elton John!”. It still boggles my mind that two of those have come true considering at 12 years of age I had mighty delusions of grandeur, but maybe I’ve always had that “dream big!” (more…)

The Art of Being a Lazy Blogger

I’ve been a lazy blogger over the past few weeks, but FUCK!, it was the holidays and the holidays are confusing and disorienting and make you want to live on the couch for a month while gorging yourself with White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles.

What I have not been is a lazy writer and somehow I’ve managed to stumble through my month-long writer’s block and spew out a bunch of stuff.

So, because I’m a lazy blogger this month, I’m going to be super-ass lame and share with you a couple of articles I wrote on other sites, but ones I’m particularly proud of. I hope you enjoy! Regular blogging will resume shortly and I think my first post will be about “moochetarians”, the title given to a person who is vegetarian except when someone gives them free food- then they will eat a pig’s entire face if they have to.

A Gray, Rainy Day in LA (Pictures)

We snuck out to LA for a few days this past weekend to finish up sound on our movie and to visit with friends and family.

It was a whirlwind trip that almost included a visit to the Conan O’Brien set to see Bryan Cranston!!!!, but alas, I forgot how AWE-INSPIRINGLY SHITTY LA traffic is and couldn’t make it on time. Woof! I do not miss being a slave to my car and I do not miss paying so much for gas (gas is $2.99 in Austin, suckers!)

The weather was not typical LA weather. It was cold and gray and barely surpassed 60 degrees most days.

It was beautiful.

It might not be the right city for me, but that doesn’t mean I have to stop romanticizing about it.

Please excuse the weird face I’m making in the last photo- I downed a half of a bottle of red wine before my flight…

Oh, and the second to last photo is of Geoff injecting cream cheese into a corn dog.

Yes, they taste as amazing as they sound.

Well, they just released their limited edition Lord of the Rings poster in anticipation of The Hobbit and it’s still in stock!!!

Never mind, it sold out in the five minutes it took me to write this, but look how cool it is!

Stylish Bicycle Helmets for the Hipster Cyclist in Your Life

Sometimes I have ideas.

One of these ideas was to make fashionable bike helmets.

I wanted to make fashionable bike helmets to a.) encourage people to actually wear helmets and b.) feel like winner while wearing a bike helmet.

Let’s face it, bike helmets aren’t the snazziest style accessory one can wear. They’re big, plasticy and make you look like a big doofus.

Since I’m not business savvy and I have no idea how to make helmets or sell them, I’ve found hip bike helmets that other people made. People who realized their dreams of making bike helmets; people who make me feel like a loser.

Yo, this is a good holiday gift for the biker in your family. Especially if you don’t want them to die.

These helmets are all really expensive, but you can’t put a price on cyclist fashion, ya know?

An Open Letter to John Aielli

Dear John Aielli,

A few weeks back, I saw you for the first time out in this strange and beautiful world. I was walking into the alley below UT’s School of Communication as you were shuffling out.
A smile was playing on your lips– not a smug, pretentious smile, but a smile of someone who appreciates life, the birds in the trees, the geckos on the sidewalk and the clouds above our heads.

Seeing you smile to yourself made me smile to myself– you were exactly how I pictured you (this is bordering on slightly creepy, but something makes me think you’d appreciate “borderline creepy”).

When I first arrived in Austin 4 years ago, you were the jovial “is he drunk or isn’t he?” uncle figure that welcomed me to the city with your weekday morning program “Eklektikos” on KUT.

I’ll never forget the first time I felt the uncomfortableness of your dead air and the sounds of you mispronouncing a band’s name or accidentally playing the same song over again, even though (more…)
